Dafni Karras

March 24, 2021

CHARLOTTE – Mrs. Dafni Karras of Charlotte passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 24, 2021. She was born in Evrytania, Greece and lived in Charlotte since 1957.

Dafni was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, working at the Greek Festival, helping with the pastry preparations, and tirelessly dedicating her time and talents in many capacities for her church.  She was also a silent helper to many people by preparing meals, taking them to medical appointments and opening her home to others.  Her daughters often joked about their home being a hotel for visitors from Greece or for those who just needed a place to stay for a while.  Dafni was a kind, tender spirit and will be remembered for her love and compassion for anyone in need.  Those close to her will also remember her playful and quirky sense of humor.

Dafni was preceded in death by her loving husband, Nick of 62 years.  She is survived by her daughters, Loula Kontoulas and her husband, Johnny and Maria Kleto and her husband, Johnny; grandchildren, Erica Budds and her husband, Joshua, Nicholas Kleto and Charlie Kleto.  In addition, Dafni was also blessed with many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

Funeral services for Dafni will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral with Rev. Dr. Jonathan Mettasophia officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.  Covid protocols will be followed at the church.  For those unable to attend the service, it will be livestreamed at https://vimeo.com/event/165729/457c79a80e

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Attn: Preschool or Main Altar Renovation Fund, 600 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC, 28203.

Dafni’s family wishes to thank her caregiver, Susan Clemmons and Atrium Health Hospice of Union County for their wonderful care and support.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Thea Dafnoula was one of the sweetest people I have ever known. I will always remember her walking in the neighborhood hand in hand with Theo Niko and his little fisherman's cap. Her smile was infectious and I love her like a second mother. I am happy that she is at peace and together with her beloved husband once again. May her memory be eternal.

Ms Dafni and her husband Nick were 2 of the kindest, humblest, most "genuine" people I've ever met. I will always remember her for being a rare gem!

So sorry for your loss Maria and Loula and family. I fondly remember your mother as "Thea" to me since I had no relatives in Charlotte. She was always so kind and soft spoken to me (and I remember thinking can she be Greek?!). She always gave me a warm welcome into her home, and a big smile anywhere and anytime I see her. Even when she was displeased with me and the guys with our shenanigans', she shook her head and wagged her finger at us with a big smile. Have not seen her in a couple of decades yet remember her like yesterday and miss her already. May her memory be eternal and may she enjoy her eternal life with her beloved "Theo".
