Charles Malcolm Viser

October 17, 2026

Charles Malcolm Viser, 54, passed away on October 17th, 2026.

A Charlotte native, Casey was the son of Patricia Cox Viser. In addition to his mother, he is survived by sister Martha Louise Viser, children, Charles Malcolm Viser, Jr, John Lawrence Dabbs Viser and Teresa Carol Viser and former wife Carol Dabbs Viser.

Casey was raised by his loving mother, Pat, with his sister Marty and grandmother, Nana. He attended Charlotte Latin School, where he was in the first class of “lifers”. While at Latin, he made many lasting friendships and played goalie on the varsity soccer team. During his junior year, Latin won the state championship with Casey guarding the net.

He attended Hampden-Sydney College and Campbell School of Law. Following law school he began a 13 year tenure at James, McElroy and Diehl under the watchful eye of Bill Diehl, who became a trusted mentor to Casey and like a grandfather to his family.

In 2013 Casey was appointed by Governor Pat McCrory to serve as District Court Judge. He was later elected Special Superior Court Judge serving in Mecklenburg County as well as traveling to most of the 100 counties in North Carolina - an experience he treasured and shared with his family, marking on a map each time he visited a new county. Public service was instilled in Casey at a young age, and he served with great pleasure.

Casey enjoyed work, he was grateful to help people going through distressing times. But he loved his family. Mac, Dabbs and Tess were the true joys of his life. Casey never missed a Saturday soccer game or a school play. He read books at night using silly voices; he taught them how to ride their bikes. He went on countless Y-Guide trips with each of the children, took the family to the beach each summer and to Disney World on multiple occasions. Casey was a kid at heart, making him a wonderful father. As the children grew older, Casey taught them how to drive, supported their move to Myers Park High School and was a champion of each of their college choices.

Casey never entered a room where he didn’t know and speak to multiple people, always remembering names and details of their lives. He was the life of any party and always entertained with his stories, jokes and political commentary. Casey will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He is gone too soon.

A service of celebration and gratitude for Casey’s life will be held at 3:00 on Thursday October 22nd at Christ Episcopal Church with a reception following in All Saint’s Hall.

Memorials in his honor can made to Guardian ad Litem at 720 E. 4th St #206, Charlotte 28202 or Charlotte Rescue Mission at 915 W. 1st Street Charlotte, 28202.
