Anne Elizabeth Vincent
May 18, 2026
CHARLOTTE – Anne Elizabeth Vincent (Lunas) died peacefully on Monday, May 18, 2026, at her home in Charlotte, North Carolina in the presence of her three sons. She was born in Orange, New Jersey on March 29, 1933, the oldest of two children of Lawrence John Lunas and Pauline Lunas (MacGahan). She and her brother spent significant parts of each summer at their family cottage in the Catskill Mountains, where other extended family members also had summer homes. One of these people was an aunt who ended up being very influential in Anne’s life, inspiring Anne to apply to the College of William and Mary. Anne graduated from that institution in 1955 with a degree in English. Her connection to William and Mary was very important to her; she attended numerous class reunions throughout her life and served for many years as the class reporter for the Class of 1955.
Upon graduation, Anne returned to northern New Jersey and took a job with AT&T Bell Labs in New York City. While there, she was introduced by a mutual friend to Charles (Jerry) Vincent. They were married on March 22, 1958, in Montclair, New Jersey, the start of a close, supportive 67 year marriage. Jerry predeceased Anne by a very short time, passing away on January 6, 2026.
Soon after getting married, Anne and Jerry moved to Columbus, Ohio, where they spent over 30 years. Initially Anne focused her energies on raising her three boys. In her early 40s, however, she pursued her interest in healthcare by studying nursing. She used her degree in numerous ways. Anne started by working in hospitals, but eventually moved to private duty nursing, which she appreciated for the one-on-one interaction. She also devoted herself to helping others with childbirth, spending several years teaching Lamaze classes through the Birthright organization. She was extremely devoted to her students, not only teaching them but also making baby sweaters or blankets for them, combining her interests in childbirth and knitting.
In the mid-1990s, after Jerry retired, they decided to move closer to family. With sons in the Atlanta and Washington, DC areas and Anne’s mother in Florida, they chose Charlotte, a location convenient to all those places. Anne took pleasure in visiting and hosting family and enjoyed their home in Charlotte. She maintained her interest in healthcare, scheduling and volunteering with Red Cross blood drives for many years.
Staying connected with family and friends was among Anne’s major priorities in life. She will perhaps be most remembered for her devotion to the lost art of letter writing. Even in the age of email and texting, she much preferred sending handwritten letters and notes. All who knew her appreciated and benefited from this practice. In addition, Anne was virtually always in the midst of knitting a sweater or blanket for newborn babies of family and friends.
Anne was a lifelong learner. She always had a book going. Many times, it was related to history; she had a particular interest in biographies about US political figures and British royalty. Anne also enjoyed watching classic movies and news programs. She also had a discerning ear for classical music. Anne was a frequent concertgoer with Jerry and often had classical music playing in her home.
Cats were Anne’s favorite animal, and while she was knitting or reading, a cat was generally keeping her company sitting in her lap. She had fun with the naming of her cats, honoring some of her favorite music. Examples included Holy Cat (after Neil Diamond’s “Holly Holy”) and Eine Kleine Nachtkatze, or Nachie for short (after Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”).
Anne was devoted to the church. Most recently she was a member of Matthews Presbyterian Church. Prior to that, she attended Church of the Redeemer United Methodist and Brookwood Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio.
Anne is survived by her children James Vincent, Andrew Vincent and his wife, Carol Hardy Vincent, and Robert Vincent and his wife, Ava Vincent; five wonderful grandchildren, Alexandra, Christine, Christopher, Katelyn, and Zachary as well as several cherished nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Anne will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Matthews Presbyterian Church, 207 W. John Street, Matthews, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in Anne’s memory may be made to the American Red Cross North Carolina Region or Birthright.
