Plyler 02Ruth Blair Plyler CHARLOTTE - Ruth Plyler entered eternity with her Lord and Savior on Friday, February 5, 2016, after a short and valiant struggle with sarcoma. Anna Ruth Blair was born March 19, 1925 in Danville, VA, the daughter of Lillie Mae McQueen and Edwin Thomas Blair. The family relocated to Roanoke, VA where Ruth attended elementary and junior high school. They moved again in 1939 to Charlotte as Ruth's father took a new position following the Great Depression. Here she attended Central High School and graduated with the class of 1942. During WWII she worked with the American Red Cross as a nurse's aide at night while attending Queens College during the day. When the war ended she enrolled at Longwood College in Farmville, VA., and graduated with a business degree. She worked several different jobs until she met the love of her life on a blind date. Over Christmas in 1950 a fellow Belk's employee introduced Ruth to her brother - P.W. "Pete" Plyler. They married in October of 1951 and established residence in Charlotte. Ruth and Pete had two sons - Edwin Blair and Philip Wesley Plyler. Ruth lived for her children and their interests and activities growing up - primarily golf. She and Pete spent several years as chair-couple for the junior golf program at Myers Park Country Club where the family played. Ruth kept the books for her husband's business and enjoyed playing bridge, golf, and time at the beach until Pete's retirement. Then they began a second life together frequently attending Tar Heel Senior golf events together. Most important to her was the love of her family and friends and faith in her God. Ruth was a member of the Ruth Fisher Class at Myers Park Methodist Church, and a long-time member of Myers Park Country Club. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Pete, an older sister Helen Blair, and her youngest son (Wes). Survivors include her son Blair Plyler and wife Ellen, her sister Bettye Neal and husband Cecil, nephews Tom Dillon and his wife Sis, Dwight Plyler Jr. and wife Caroline, and Phillip Plyler and wife Harriet. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 11, 2016, in the Francis Chapel of Myers Park United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bill Roth and the Reverend Melvin McIntosh presiding.
