Lucille Sophia Nielancy Weiner

February 27, 2026

Lucille Sophia Nielancy Weiner, 72, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, after an eight-year battle with cancer. Born on Friday, November 13, 1953, in Quebec, Canada, Luci spent the latter part of her life on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. She was formerly a snowbird in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after many international destinations along the way.

Luci marched to the beat of her own drum and did things her own way. Independent yet deeply devoted- at one point she lived off the land in Mont-Laurier, Canada, hunting and fishing. She also worked for Wardair and was even a licensed pilot for fun. Later, she moved to Florida to work for a travel agency on Las Olas Blvd. and soon met her late husband, Kenneth Weiner. They were wed by legendary Rev. Ted Anderson at Brant Point Lighthouse on Nantucket. Together, they split their time between Florida and Massachusetts and welcomed their only child, Mara.

When motherhood became her focus, Luci adapted and worked at Sam Goody at The Galleria Mall so Mara could attend nearby Bayview Elementary while volunteering at the school library. She later held seasonal roles with the U.S. Census Bureau, the 'Sconset Post Office, and Air Canada.

With the same stubborn resolve that shaped her life, Luci faced HR+/HER2- breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and most recently, triple-negative breast cancer in her liver. After years of surgeries, treatments and even chemotherapy-induced diabetes, she ultimately chose peace and took flight from her broken body. In Luci's final month, between winter storms, her daughter was able to evacuate her from Nantucket to Charlotte, hoping they would return to the island together in May.

Widowed by her husband Ken in 2011, Luci is now reunited with him; her parents Stanislaw and Antonina; her siblings Clara (Claire), Jean-Pierre (J.P.), Christian (Chris); and cherished pets Bijou, Dixie, and Twixie.

She is survived by her only daughter, Mara Lancey Weiner, who describes their bond as "opposites in temperament, twins in devotion." They argued hard and loved harder, always remaining each other's safe place. Luci also adored her "big galoot," Boeing 747, who as a canine was still family in every sense. Ensuring his happiness brought her deep peace.

She found joy in British mystery novels, shopping on QVC/HSN, consuming fine champagne, lobster, Montreal-style bagels, ceviche, Hooters peel-and-eat shrimp and breaded wings, and even the occasional Taco Bell run. She loved Grey Lady days on Nantucket, long walks on Surfside Beach, music, world languages, tennis, and puzzles. She could often be found beginning and pausing rounds of "Swedish Death Cleaning" while Shrek, Minions, and Jeopardy played on repeat. She looked forward to meeting fellow Canadian Alex Trebek in heaven one day.

She firmly believed in no hats on the bed, no seashells inside the house, no singing before breakfast, and that Friday the 13th was the luckiest day of all. A proud Ukrainian, she carried her heritage with quiet strength and resilience. Her final trip will be a magnificent one.

An intimate gathering will be held on Nantucket at a later date to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lucille Sophia Nielancy Weiner's memory to Little Rhody Rescue, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, or a cancer research organization of your choosing.
