Doris Alexander Madison

Doris Alexander Madison of Charlotte, North Carolina passed away on June 30, 2016 at Sharon Towers after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on October 5, 1926 to the late Leland Epton and Janie Robinson Alexander.

She was married to her loyal and loving husband Samuel Lewis Madison on June 21, 1947 and was devoted to him through 57 years until his death in 2004.

Throughout their marriage Doris and Sam resided in Charlotte where they raised their family. Doris graduated from The Presbyterian School of Nursing in the class of 1947 and began a long nursing career that spanned several decades at Presbyterian Hospital and Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Associates. She was a member of the Presbyterian Hospital Alumni Association and enjoyed seeing friends and colleagues at events throughout the years. Doris was a member of the Ruth Fisher Sunday School Class at Myers Park United Methodist Church.

Doris was a constant source of quiet strength, integrity and love to her family. She supported her children and grandchildren in all their endeavors and was a positive influence in all their lives.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband and her sister, Jane Alexander Hamrick. She is survived by her daughters, Gayle Spears and her husband, Bill of Charlotte and Susan Stanton and her husband, Tom of Stantonsburg, NC; a son, Samuel Lewis Madison III, of Charlotte; sisters, Lucinda Thornburg and her husband, Bob of Dallas, NC and Avis Taylor and her husband, Chip of Gastonia, NC; four grandchildren, Chris Smith, John Stanton and his wife, Susan, Jesse Spears Margetson and her husband, Jordan and Holley Spears; and six great grandchildren.

A service to celebrate Doris' life will be held at the Francis Chapel of Myers Park United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 5, 2016. The Reverend Bill Roth will officiate. Visitation will follow the memorial service at the church.
