Martha McNeal Bahnson

November 1, 2024

Martha McNeal Bahnson, 78, of Charlotte passed away on November 1, 2024.  She was born April 29, 1946, in Charlotte.  Martha was the devoted daughter of the late H. Mark McNeal and the late Harriet K. McNeal.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Loflin Jennings who she missed every day since her passing exactly three years ago.

Martha was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend whose warmth, kindness and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. She worked in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System for years and had a rare and beautiful gift for connecting with children, sparking their imaginations and making them feel seen and understood. Her innate ability to bring joy to young hearts was one of her most treasured qualities, and it extended to everyone she met. She was endlessly fun, compassionate, and supportive—a bright light in the lives of those around her. Her legacy of love and laughter will live on in the cherished memories she leaves behind.

Martha had a deep love for animals, always surrounding herself with pets who were as much a part of her family as anyone else. Her gentle nature and compassion extended to every creature she encountered.

The beach was her sanctuary, a place where she felt peace and connected to the world around her. Whether talking and laughing with family, listening to the waves, or simply breathing in the salty air, the beach was where she found joy and renewal.

Martha is survived by her younger sister Joanie Teel and husband Tim Teel; daughter Natalie Shaw and husband Dave; son Charlie Bahnson and wife Cara.  She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, who were her heart’s greatest joy - Mia and Henry Shaw and Reaghan and Charlie Bahnson.

A service of celebration and remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, November 15, 2024 at Myers Park Baptist Church, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte.  In lieu of flowers, Martha would have wanted donations sent to the Humane Society of Charlotte.
