Jean Elizabeth Howell Hutson (Mrs. Lucius Arthur Hutson, Jr.) was born July 29, 1925 in Greenville County, S.C. to Estes B. Howell, Sr. and Eva Cothran Howell. Mrs. Hutson died on Sunday morning, July 7, 2024 at Brookdale, Clare Bridge Memory Care in Charlotte, NC after a stroke.
Mrs. Hutson was predeceased by her best friend and loving husband of sixty years, Lucius Arthur Hutson, Jr., her brother, Estes B. Howell Jr., his wife, Betty T. Howell and nephew Andrew Howell.
Mrs. Hutson is survived by her children, Peggy J. Hutson and Deborah H. Benton (Kenneth) of Charlotte, Lucius A. Hutson, III (Rebecca) of Waxhaw and Paul A. Hutson (Lynne) of Hilton Head Island, SC and her grandchildren, Matthew Weston (Jennefer), Gregory Weston (Jennifer), Lindsey W. Melton (Jeremy), Jason Benton (Rebecca), Mindy B. Vergakis (Taylor), Jordan Benton (Elizabeth), Abby Hutson, Caleb Hutson, Molly H. Frisbee (Victor), Nicholas Hutson and Cameron Hutson. Mrs. Hutson’s great grandchildren include Jacob, Kennady and Hutson Benton, Eva, Emmitt and Elsie Vergakis, Greer and Amelia Benton, Kayla and Charles Weston, Isaac Melton, Edith and Thaddeus Hutson.
Mrs. Hutson attended Greenville City Schools and was a graduate of Furman University. In Greenville she was PTA President, President of Home Economics in Homemaking and an active member of Augusta Road Baptist Church and First Baptist Church before moving to Charlotte, NC in 1963. As a member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Charlotte she was a leader in G.A.s, WMU, President of Senior Adult Sunday School Class, member of Craft Class, Hospice group and Cancer support group. She said her church family, and the friendships she made had been a comfort to her. In her last weeks, she spoke of her love for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 11:00am with Rev. Dennis Foust, PhD officiating. The family will receive friends in Broach Hall immediately following the service. Entombment will be private in Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum.
