Eleanore (Elly) May Chiger

April 4, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Eleanore (Elly) May Chiger, 92, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 4, 2023.  Elly was born May 28, 1930, in Hartford CT to Ragnar and Astrid Lundquist. She had two older brothers, Henry and George and an older sister, Alice.

Elly married Constantine (Con) Chiger on September 12, 1953, after he returned from being stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.  They had been married for sixty-two years at the time of his passing in 2016.  After moving around a bit, they ended up settling in Dix Hills, Long Island, NY after Con secured a teaching job in Garden City.

Elly grew up in Hartford and on Amston Lake in Connecticut.  She brought her love of the lake life with her and in 1967 they bought an empty lot on Wanaksink Lake in Rock Hill, NY.  By 1969 they had a house built and enjoyed their first summer there.  Elly quickly became involved in the community (who could forget "pizza night" at the clubhouse) and was one of the "lake ladies" that played an such important role in keeping the kids active and involved during those lazy summer days. It’s hard to describe the impact Elly and Con had on our lives, but it was lifelong and will always be treasured.

After Con retired, they moved to Western Carolina and then down to Florida for the rest of their lives. They travelled around the world, enjoyed trips to their special spot in Puerto Rico and cruised often.

Elly was very talented and creative and loved decorating for the holidays.  She was an expert calligraphist, enjoyed knitting and rug making, painting watercolors and gardening.  She stayed active by playing golf, sailing, ice skating, playing Mahjongg and walking the dog.

Elly is survived by her children, Craig Chiger, Scott Chiger and his wife, Dawn, Glenn Chiger and his wife, Em and Lynne Chiger; grandson, Nolan Chiger.  Also surviving are her three nephews and eight nieces and their families.

A celebration of her life will be held at Linwood Cemetery in Colchester, CT in the summer of 2023.
