Gwendolyn Featherstone Cathey

March 10, 2023

CHARLOTTE -

Gwendolyn Featherstone Cathey, 94, of Charlotte, passed away on March 10, 2023. Gwen was born in Gaston County, North Carolina on July 26, 1928, the daughter of Carl W. and Mabel Falls Featherstone. She was raised in Gaston County, graduating from Gastonia High School and from Women’s College of the University of North Carolina (now known as UNC-G) with a degree in Home Economics. After college Gwen worked as a Home Demonstration agent in Gaston County. In 1953 Gwen married Gene Austin Cathey and moved to Charlotte where she worked in the Medical Records Department at Charlotte Memorial Hospital until she and Gene began their family, raising two girls. Gwen’s mission in raising her girls was to give them roots and wings: roots to give them a link to home and heritage and wings to give them the freedom and confidence to explore the world. She valued family trips to the NC mountains when the girls were young and, later, especially treasured family visits to Kiawah Island. She and Gene also enjoyed traveling abroad with Gwen’s brother and sister-in-law.

As a longtime member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Gwen was active in women’s circles, various mission projects, and the Mr. and Ms. Sunday School class; she also traveled with Gene on Covenant Choir trips. Gwen was an accomplished seamstress and quilter and a member of the Charlotte Quilt Guild, sometimes exhibiting and even winning awards for her quilt pieces.

Gwen was predeceased by her husband, Gene, and her parents. She is survived by her two daughters, Camille Cox (Frank) of Holly Springs, NC, and Amy L. Cathey of Charlotte, grandchildren, Sarah Cox (Seth Huskey) of Durham, NC and Jonathan Cox (Cody Sayers) of West Burke, VT, great-grandchildren, Simon Huskey of Hendersonville, NC and Mabel Anne Cox of West Burke, VT, and brother, Bob Featherstone of Matthews, NC.

A memorial service to celebrate Gwen’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends in the Welcome Center at the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to Covenant Presbyterian Church for the Traditional Music Fund, 1000 E. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or to Friendship Trays, PO Box 241046, Charlotte, NC 28224-1046.
