CHARLOTTE – Mary Anne Boone Thomas died Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Southminster after a brief illness.  Born July 1, 1937, in Greensboro, NC, she was the daughter of the late Hoyt Winfield Boone and Cam Boren Boone.

Mary Anne graduated from Greensboro High School in 1955 and attended Salem College, graduating in 1959 with a degree in education.  Following college, she moved to Charlotte to become an elementary school teacher.  It was there, through mutual friends, that she met the love of her life John (“Squints”) Thomas.  Married in 1961, Charlotte became their home while those same friends remained steadfast and true throughout her life.

Mimi, as she was most affectionately known, was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church. She served as president of the Christ Church Kindergarten Board, was a volunteer at Charlotte Latin School serving on the Parents’ Council, and was a member of the Junior League of Charlotte.  Mary Anne was a member of Charlotte Country Club where she loved playing tennis and golf for decades with family and friends.  An avid bridge player, she always looked forward to games with her weekly bridge group.  Some of her most treasured time was spent at her beloved Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach, where she and Squints vacationed with family for nearly fifty years.

Mary Anne is survived by her sons, John Guion Thomas, Jr. and his wife, Beth, William Boone Thomas and his wife, Katharine and Marshall Hoyt Thomas and his wife, Jill, all of Charlotte, NC; her six granddaughters whom she loved dearly, Sara Elizabeth Thomas, Barbara Anne Thomas Evangelous and her husband, Tyler, Lillian Grace Thomas Warpula and her husband, Alex, Mary Margaret Thomas, Margaret Hidell Thomas, and Cam Boone Thomas.  Also surviving are her brother, Hoyt Winfield Boone, Jr. of Greensboro, NC, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless other friends and acquaintances whom she loved and treated like family.  That was just her way.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Guion Thomas, Sr.

A visitation for family and friends will be 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, March 20, 2023, at the home of William Boone and Katharine Thomas.  A celebration of Mary Anne’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at Christ Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.  The service will be livestreamed at: https://www.christchurchcharlotte.org/funeral-live-broadcast/ for those unable to attend in person.
