Alethia Morgan Newman Ross, 94, of Charlotte, N.C. died on December 3, 2022 in her home at The Cypress. She was born on March 15, 1928 in Durham, N.C., daughter of the late Francis Greer Morgan and Alethia Holmes Morgan. She attended Averett College and Duke University.

Alethia was a resident of Charlotte for 70 years, active at St. John’s Baptist Church, serving as president of the WMU and active in Sunday School. She joined Providence Baptist Church after marrying Alan Ross. Alethia was an avid bridge player, member of Kosmos Book Club, and rarely missed watching a Duke basketball game much to the chagrin of two of her sons who graduated from UNC-CH. She enjoyed watching old western movies later in life. Alethia had a warm generous spirit which she shared with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Loyd Newman, after 45 years of marriage. In 1998, she married Beverly Alan Ross, a high school friend, who passed away on May 13, 2020 after 21 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Geoffrey Newman.

She is survived by her sons Rob Newman and wife Winona, Morgan Newman and wife Jane, Forrest Newman and wife Carol; grandchildren Courtney Watson and husband Kevin, Brittany Villarreal and husband Marcelo, Morgan and Megan Newman, and great-grandchild Stella Watson.

The family would like to thank her loving friends at The Cypress and her caregivers for their compassion and support.

A memorial service honoring Alethia’s life will be held at 2:00p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2023 at The Cypress, 3442 Cypress Club Dr., Charlotte.
