Alice Porter Peery

After living a life of courage, determination and grace following a stroke 22 years ago, Alice died peacefully on Saturday, October 15. A rare Charlotte native, Alice was born August 19, 1948, the daughter of Dr. W. Stewart Peery and Annette Rumph Peery. Alice attended Charlotte Country Day School and was a graduate of Duke University. She received her masters in Library Science from UNC-Chapel Hill. Alice’s career culminated with the position of Collections Development Officer for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system. She was highly regarded within the profession and had an active role in the American Library Association as a committee member and sought out speaker.

Alice is survived by her brother Dr. Walton S. Peery (wife Helen), Aunt Angela Burns, nephews Stewart Peery (wife Ellen), Elliott Peery (wife Jen), and niece Day Palmer (husband George). Alice was a wonderful great-aunt to Walton, Rebecca, Buck and Elem Peery, and Nelson Palmer.

Alice will be remembered for her love of birds, gardening, good food, orchid growing talent, classical choral music and being the most enthusiastic Clay Aiken groupie.

The family would like to thank Sunrise on Providence and Hospice for their loving care. Special thanks go to some of Alice’s incredibly devoted friends who helped her navigate life the past 22 years: Carol Myers, Shelley Welton, Robin Bryan, Margaret Pennington, Lydia McNeary, Steven Blackburn, Bob White, Millie Cox, Kay Hodges, the Fellowship Sunday School Class and many others.

A memorial service at Myers Park Presbyterian Church will be held Thursday October 20 at 3:00pm.  The service will be livestreamed at https://myersparkpres.org/live/
