Sally Ann Brown Mauney

Sally Ann Brown Mauney of Matthews, North Carolina passed away on July 25, 2022 at the age of 90. Sally was born in Charlotte on September 12, 1931 to Johnson Harold Brown and Jessie Mae Moore Brown. After graduating from Central High School, she attended Duke University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. It was at Duke where she met her husband, William (Bill) Shayle Mauney, and they married in Charlotte in 1950.

Over the course of their marriage and Bill’s career with Travelers Insurance, Sally and Bill lived in Charlotte, New Orleans, Jackson, MS, Oklahoma City, and Louisville, KY. Sally returned to Charlotte in 1996 following Bill’s death. In 2007, she moved to Matthews Glen retirement community in Matthews,  where she lived until her passing.

Sally was a fourth grade teacher for many years. In her later years, she continued her passion of helping children through her work as a volunteer at Alexander Youth Network in Charlotte, where she was a tutor until she was in her eighties.

Sally was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church, belonging to the Christian Home Sunday School Class. She and Bill loved dancing and traveling, and Sally was an avid bridge player for many years, continuing to host during her years at Matthews Glen.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and her younger son, David George Mauney. She is survived by her son William Shayle Mauney, Jr. and wife Laura, of Magnolia, TX; and David’s wife, Nan, of Charlotte.  She is also survived by grandchildren Kristen Mauney Baker and husband Nicholas of Raleigh; Jonathan Mauney and wife Emily, of Brooklyn, NY; Ashley Mauney and Melissa Mauney, of Magnolia, TX; and great-granddaughter, Anna Baker, of Raleigh.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at 11:00am in the chapel at Providence United Methodist Church. A private burial will precede the service.
