Channing Bolton Brown Jr.

May 17, 2022

Channing Brown passed away May 17, 2022. He is survived by his three children: Ellen of Takoma Park, Maryland, Channing III of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and John and wife, Irene, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren, John Jr. and Marjorie; sister, Catherine Browning and her husband, Bill, of Charlotte, North Carolina; and a niece and nephews and their children and grandchildren.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, Catherine Poe and Channing Bolton Brown Sr.

Channing grew up in Charlotte, NC. He graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA in 1945, and from the University of Virginia (where several generations of the family have attended) in Charlottesville, VA, in 1949. He was an Electrical Engineer and worked for various companies including Dupont Co., Union Carbide in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Sargent and Lundy in Chicago, Illinois. He retired and moved to Huntley, Il.

He was a leader in a Boy Scout troop, was a member of the Optimist Club, and served as a member of the Session of the Presbyterian Church in Palatine, Il. In his spare time, he built things (like a television and computer) and taught computer skills to residents in his Huntley community. He was one of the original members of Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte where his father served as a founder.

After retirement, Channing packed and delivered food four days a week for Meals on Wheels. He delivered meals for 19 years; even after moving to Huntley, he continued his then 68-mile daily circuit. His clients depended on him, and he enjoyed seeing and helping them.

Channing also loved to travel. He visited Iceland (and was always proud of the Reagan-Gorbachev sweater he got), the Mediterranean, Hawaii, Mexico (where he climbed Chichen Itza), Canada, and Alaska.

There will be a service at Christ Church in Charlotte, NC, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2022.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association (in care of the 'Channing Brown Memorial,' on-line or mail to 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601), or Christ Church (1412 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207), or the charity of your choice.
