Margaret "Peggy" Reed Stokes

February 14, 2022

CHARLOTTE – Margaret “Peggy” Reed Stokes, 95, of Charlotte, entered the presence of God on Valentine’s Day, Monday, February 14, 2022.  She was the daughter of the late Sawyer Stanmore Reed and Idella Livingston Reed.

Margaret graduated from Harding High School in 1944 and then worked for Cutler & Hammer until she married her entrepreneur husband, Jarrial “Jerry” Astor Stokes.  After marrying Jerry, she took on the role of not only being his devoted wife, but also his lifetime assistant for their business ventures together.  She assisted with their company United, Inc. DBA The Car Market, as well as founding various national and local associations and multiple magazine publications in addition to website design.  However, her first priority was being a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.

In 1956 Margaret’s sister Elizabeth and her husband, Carmon and their sons, Joe and Larry helped convert a barn into a sanctuary in what was to become Hickory Grove Baptist Church.  Margaret was an active member there until her recent health issues prevented her from attending.

Margaret is survived by her loving daughter, Sandra Stokes Montague; grandchildren, Robert Andrew "Andy" Montague and his wife, Lauren and Elizabeth Lindsay "Liz" Montague-Farwell and her husband, Mike; great-grandchildren, Margaret "Maggie” Montague, Jackson Reed "Jax", Emerson Wayne, Charleston Rae Farwell and baby boy, Montague.  They are all eternally grateful for the amazing and unselfish love she leaves in their hearts and the legacy of faith she continues to pass on to each.  Margaret’s husband preceded her to heaven in 2012 after 64 years of marriage.

A private family service was held at Sharon Memorial Park.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
