CHARLOTTE – Ruby Rebecca Rumley Paul, 94, passed away Thursday, February 3, 2022, at Sharon Towers.  Born November 16, 1927, in Elkin, North Carolina, Ruby was the daughter of Letha Sink Rumley Hedrick and Julius Pierson Rumley.

Ruby was raised in Winston-Salem, NC, where she graduated from Mineral Springs High School.  She then attended her beloved “WC”, the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina, now UNC-Greensboro, graduating with a BA in Spanish. Ruby attained her MA in Teaching from Duke University and was a Fulbright Scholar at the Sorbonne in Paris.

At a young singles’ retreat in Montreat with several Presbyterian churches, Ruby’s life took a new turn. There she met a young accountant, Joe Paul, who would become the love of her life. After much pleading, Ruby agreed to marry Joe, and they were wed in 1957 at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem.  Joe’s job eventually led them to Charlotte, where he and Ruby would raise their family.

In Charlotte, Ruby served on several boards, including the Charlotte Nature Museums and the Charlotte Symphony Guild.  She was a Sunday School teacher and served on numerous committees at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.  She was also an active volunteer at Charlotte Country Day School.

Ruby loved gardening, walking on the beach and riding the waves.  She was an avid reader and an incredible cook.  Ruby lived a life of faith and intellectual curiosity.  She loved her children, grandchildren and her Joe.

Ruby is survived by her children, Susie Paul Kornegay and her husband, Russ and David Paul and his wife, Tracey; four grandchildren, George Kornegay and his wife, Meg, McKinsey Kornegay, Devon Paul and Wesley Paul.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph McKinsey Paul, her brothers, James Pierson Rumley and Fred Alfred Rumley, and her sister, Joann Rumley.
