Richard Franklin Abernethy

December 16, 2018

CHARLOTTE - Richard Franklin Abernethy, born January 12, 1948  passed away at the age of 70 on Sunday, December 16, 2018 from complications resulting from early onset Alzheimer’s and dementia. He was joined in his final hours by his children, Scott Ward and Laura Jane Abernethy, and their mother Joanna Ward. Richard was born and raised in Charlotte, NC, son of Thelma Swearngan and Charles Abernethy. He lived and worked for many years as an actor and playwright in New York City before retiring to his hometown. Possessing of a humble charm that often seemed without limit, he was quickly adored by all who met him. Richard had a deep love and respect for other people, but his greatest love was stories, and he told them well.

Surviving Richard are his children Scott and Laura, sister Nancy Abernethy Underwood Young, and brother Ken Abernethy; his nieces Laney Abernethy, Anna Abernethy, Kyle Underwood Shive, and Kathryn Underwood Melton; nephews Chuck Abernethy, and David Pollock Underwood; and countless collaborators throughout the years.

Those who knew Richard will remember most of all his constant and unconditional love for his children.

I met Richard in Charlotte when I was about 20, he was a year older than I; and I think I adopted him as my big brother almost immediately. He was one of the kindest, most gentle
people i have ever known. We kept in touch until he left New York, but I lost him shortly after I got married and my attempts to contact him while he was in Charlotte were not successful. I should have tried harder. He was the family support that I needed, and I loved him as a brother. Although I guess now I have to forgive him for getting my poor cat high.
