Moffatt Grier Sherard, Jr.

Moffatt Grier Sherard, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully at Southminster on Saturday, May 6, 2017. He was born on May 24, 1926 in DeLand, FL, son of Moffatt Grier Sherard and Myrtle Sherard. Moffatt attended the Citadel Military College and graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was Head Cheerleader in 1948. Moffatt was lovingly known by the nickname, Mop Mop, given to him by his grandchildren. He was a devoted son, husband and father.

Music was of great importance to him and as a young man, he sang with the Apollo Boys Choir of Birmingham, AL. He also sang for many years in the choir at Trinity Presbyterian Church, as well as at weddings and social functions.

Mr. Sherard was in textile sales for many years prior to working for First Federal Savings and Loan, Charlotte. At the age of 50, he and Alice Walker formed Walker/Sherard Realty eventually becoming Moffatt Sherard Associates. He was Chairman of the MLS Committee and Board President of Charlotte Association of Realtors. Mr. Sherard later sold his company to Merrill Lynch Realty of Charlotte, where he was President for five years. He also served on the Board of Directors at Renfro Hosiery Mills, Mt. Airy, NC.

He was an avid golfer and a former member of Charlotte Country Club and Quail Hollow Country Club and was a director of the Southern Golf Association. He enjoyed many happy years at his home on Bald Head Island, where he spent quality time with his children, grandchildren and close friends.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-five years, Betsy Merritt Sherard; sons, John Franklin Sherard and Owens Speed Sherard; stepson, William Merritt Choate and wife, Marcy and son-in-law, Joseph Neill Ward of Winston-Salem; and four grandchildren, John Walter Sherard, Katherine Leighton Ward Brice and husband, Owen, William Merritt Choate, Jr. and John Joseph Crowell Choate. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Moffatt Grier Sherard, III; his stepdaughter, Catherine Choate Ward and his sister, Margaret Sherard.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Trinity Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Steve Lindsley officiating. The family will greet friends at a reception following the service in the church parlor.
