Maureen Sheila Murray Cox

February 18, 2024

CHARLOTTE – Maureen Sheila Murray Cox, 85, died peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster, after a brief illness.  Born June 30, 1938, in London, England, Maureen was the daughter of Jessie Louisa Mills Murray and Thomas Murray.

Maureen was a graduate of North Western Polytechnic College in London and worked as a secretary when she met Charles Cox in 1955 at the famous Lyceum Ballroom in London.  Two years of long-distance dating led Maureen to give up the big city British lifestyle and move to Oklahoma to marry Charles in October 1957.  Together, they raised two children, Mike and Patti, while living in Raleigh, NC, Lilburn, GA, and Sumter, SC.

Maureen was an avid sports fan and a competitor by nature.  Having excelled in field hockey and tennis during her teenage years, she carried her love of sports into adulthood.  She was a ranked tennis player in the state of South Carolina in mixed doubles.  Maureen was bitten by the golf bug in the 1980s, making two hole-in-ones.  An avid Carolina Panther and South Carolina Gamecock fan, she later made the switch to following Clemson football when her grandson began attending there.  After her move to Charlotte in 2016 to become a resident at Southminster Retirement Community, she enjoyed an array of fitness classes, became a Reading Buddy, enjoyed dining with new friends, and held many ping pong games with residents and staff.

Maureen’s passion was being a grandmother to her five grandchildren, hosting special grandmother sleepovers, attending their sporting events, celebrating their accomplishments, and wiping their tears.

Maureen is survived by her children, Patricia Cox Mayo and her husband, Stephen of Charlotte and Michael John Cox and his wife, Summer of Lexington, SC; five grandchildren, Charles Alexander Mayo, Kathryn Maureen Mayo, Lillian Grace Mayo, Brandon Michael Cox, and Georgia Shuler Cox and her brother, Michael Thomas Murray of Burwell, England.  She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Cox; brother, Peter John Murray, and sister, Joan Helen Murray Meadows.

The family offers special thanks to the entire Southminster community, along with Via Health Partners (formerly Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region), for their care of Maureen during her final few months.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Southminster.  The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Maureen to Thornwell Children’s Home, 302 South Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325, or the Southminster Community Fund, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
