Betty Cochrane Thompson

January 10, 2024

Betty Cochrane Thompson, 97, died on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Betty was born at Mercy Hospital, the daughter of the late Charlotte McCoy Cochrane and Fred Anderson Cochrane. She grew up in the Newell area on the family dairy farm where her wonderful parents taught her honor, values, and character. Americans were fighting World War II in Europe and the Pacific during her teenage years. She learned the importance of family and the love and respect for America. She graduated from Newell High School where she was a star basketball player.

While attending Queens College, Betty met Robert (Bob) Thompson, a serviceman stationed at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. They were married in 1946 and began a life together that lasted for over 50 years. Along the way they added Lynne and Patty to complete their family and moved from Charlotte to Tarrytown, New York, back to Raleigh and on to Anaheim, California. Betty loved being a wife and mother and experiencing the country with her children but was most happy when Bob brought their family back to Charlotte. Betty volunteered her talents at schools, supporting the girls along with their classmates and friends, all of whom she so enjoyed. With the girls moving on in life Betty embarked on a career of her own at Bailey, Banks & Biddle as a fine china, silver, crystal, and giftware buyer. Her customers became her friends, and she enjoyed going to the trade markets. When she joined Bob in retirement they traveled and spent time with their grandchildren, who adored them. Over the years, she cherished her neighbors and time in her beautiful yard with several beloved pets.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob and infant daughter. She is survived by daughters Lynne Pierce and husband Rob, and Patty Myers and husband Billy, grandchildren Catherine Barnes (Larry), Tyler Spence (David), Lauren Landgraf (Kevin), Christopher White (Ashley), and Justin White (Brenda), her sister Durand Newton (Dave) and eleven great grandchildren. The family would like to especially thank her caregivers, Terry, Jane, and Dorothy who were very dear to her.

A memorial service will be held at Sardis Presbyterian Church at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 25, 2024. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s, Samaritan’s Purse, or the SC Sheltie Rescue, P.O. Box 11224, Rock Hill, SC 29731.
