R. Edward Barry

CHARLOTTE – R. Edward Barry passed away Monday, January 8, 2024.  The son of Prudence and Raymond Barry, Ed was born in Middleboro, Massachusetts, on June 27, 1940.  His childhood was spent in Massachusetts and Rhode Island before moving to Shelby, NC in 1950. In his early years, Ed was challenged by medical issues related to his lungs for which he had to undergo multiple surgeries.  Despite these many challenges, he excelled at many athletic endeavors, particularly golf, tennis, and skiing.

Ed graduated from Shelby High School and then received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from NC State University.  Upon graduation, he joined TRW in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and soon thereafter met his future wife, Sandra Moore.  During their 57 ½ year marriage, Ed’s job required living in various locations, with Ed’s and Sandi’s favorite being Bristol, England, where they lived for eight years.  There he was the managing director of TRW England.  Upon returning to the United States, he accepted the position of VP of Sales for Hilex Controls, Inc.  In retirement, Ed enjoyed aiding entrepreneurs through SCORE, as well as mentoring troubled youth.  He was also a great “Mr. Fixit.”

Survivors include his beloved wife, Sandi; his siblings, Charlotte Barry Cannon, Claire Barry Lunt and her husband, Bob, and Paul Barry, MD and his wife, Debbie and by many beloved nieces and nephews and their children.  Also surviving are his brother-in-law, Rick Moore and sister-in-law, Helen Van Dyke and her husband, Bob.

Ed will be remembered for his quick wit, his love of his pet Dachshunds, his kindness and thoughtfulness to others, and immeasurable generosity, as well as his inner strength and determination in confronting life’s obstacles.  Ed loved life!

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church at Pleasant Hill, 15000 York Road, Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

    When Ed and Sandi lived in Michigan Ed and I were the best of friends. Ed was the most curious person you would ever meet always wondering always asking.
    When we moved to Tennessee and Ed and Sandi to North Carolina I missed his friendship so much. Ed was one of a kind an irreplaceable friend. Rest in peace

    So sorry for your loss. Ed and I were classmates at Shelby High School. I was also his paperboy during our our high school years. I remember Ed very as being very bright, kind and gentle. He will surely be missed by all who knew him.
