Sybil Jane Etters

November 21, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Sybil Jane Etters died on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, surrounded by the love of her friends.  She was born on April 24, 1944, in Chester, SC, to the late Clarence Etters and Hazel Arny Etters.

After graduating from Winthrop College (now University), she taught in Georgia before coming to Independence High School in Charlotte, where she taught until her retirement.  At Independence, she taught history, serving as department chair for many years.  She made many life-long friends there, even hiring former students as history teachers.  Sybil was passionate about history, always willing to share her knowledge with students and colleagues alike.  She helped in the concession stands for various sporting events and helped with track meets as well.  Sybil participated in teacher talent shows.  She was always willing to help her colleagues with induction ceremonies or other activities.

Outside of school, Sybil possessed a one-of-a-kind special personality, with interests ranging from crafting to murder mysteries to science fiction to cats and cooking.  Every year she made Christmas ornaments for many friends and often celebrated other holidays with special decorations.  She crocheted afghans, donated baby blankets, and even taught friends how to crochet.  Sybil especially enjoyed cooking magazines, often trying new recipes she found.  She also supported an international child and looked forward to receiving letters from him.

Her constant companions were cats...one or more all the time.  Her other time might be spent at the Mint Hill Library, searching for books by her favorite authors.

Sybil was a special person who made an impact on the lives of many students, colleagues, and friends.  She will be missed.

She was predeceased by her brother, Nolan, and sister-in-law, Betty.

Services will be private.

Memorials may be made offered in memory of Sybil to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library Foundation, 300 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 or at https://foundation.cmlibrary.org/ways-to-give/tribute-giving/
