CHARLOTTE- Stevenson “Steve” Garfield McCurry, 88, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023.  He was born in Rutherfordton, NC, as the only child to the late Stephen and Lena McCurry. 

Steve graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.  He joined the Air Force as a First Lieutenant.  While in military service, he was a jet pilot.  After his honorable discharge, he continued to fly private and commercial aircraft.  After having numerous positions in sales, Steve became the owner of a major regional distributor of orthopedic equipment to doctors and hospitals for 32 years.  Later, Steve worked for Carolina Bone and Joint until his retirement in 1994.

Steve is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, who he was blessed to have been married to for 23 years; his three children, Charles McCurry and his wife, Becky of Weaverville, NC, Douglas McCurry and his wife, Daria of Brooklyn, NY, and daughter, Nancy of Greensboro, NC; grandsons, Alex, Jack, and Matthew and step-grandchildren, Danielle and Andrew.  He is also survived by his stepchildren, Mark Minner and his wife, Sue, Scott Minner and his wife Linda, and Ann Minner and her husband, Rich; step-grandchildren, Sam, and Travis.  Steve was predeceased by his first wife, Jackie, who he married in 1961. 

The family would like to thank the nurses and certified nurses’ aides who helped with Steve's care while he lived at the Stewart Health Center at the Cypress of Charlotte.

A service to celebrate Steve's life will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, September 11, 2023, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Steve to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.
