Cynthia Glover Downs

July 25, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Cynthia Glover Downs passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at her home in Charlotte, NC after a lengthy illness.  She was born on November 21, 1956, in Morgantown, WV to the late Maxine Graham Glover and Frank Wintford Glover.

Cindy graduated from Morgantown High School in 1973 and cum laude from West Virginia University in 1979.   She was married to Gregory A. Downs of Charlotte, and she and Greg celebrated their twenty-third wedding anniversary in June.  Cindy was employed in various aspects of banking and commercial real estate finance for many years, working in Morgantown, WV, Winston Salem, NC, Atlanta, GA, and most recently in Charlotte.  She loved nothing better than listening to all kinds of music, growing big juicy tomatoes in her garden and building glorious bonfires on summer and fall evenings at their cabin on Lake Wylie.  She was a supremely loyal West Virginia University Mountaineer sports fan and watched every game during football season with unrestrained enthusiasm.  Cindy’s big, beautiful smile, wonderful laugh and sunny and engaging personality will forever be a lasting memory to all who knew her and loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Gregory A. Downs; sister, Suzanne G. Sales and her husband, William of New York; brother-in-law, Steven W. Downs and his wife, Paula of Feeding Hills, MA and their children Johnathan, Skylar, and Samantha and her cousin, Frank T. Cromer of Bruceton Mills, WV.  Cindy is also survived by her faithful dog, Lucy.

Funeral services will be held at Noon on Thursday, August 10, 2023, in the Francis Chapel at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC.   The family will receive friends following the service in Jubilee Hall.  Interment will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at East Oak Grove Cemetery in Morgantown, WV.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Cindy to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or https://www.cancer.org/.

Cindy loved her husband Greg, WVU football, their cabin and boat on the river, her Range Rover, good times with special people and fireworks, pottery (including her sister, Suzanne's), and Elizabeth Cook/country music, not necessarily in that order or limited to that list. Her wit and acerbic comments were legendary, as were her ethics. Anyone lucky enough to know her or spend any time with her has stories to share, about road trips, about cooking and eating wonderful meals, about off the beaten path escapades, about listening to live music in the highest and lowest of halls, and about her laughter. The world is a duller and quieter place without her.

My deepest respects to Cyndi’s Family and friends near and far. I have always remembered her for her wicked, sharp wit, her intellect, her irrepressible laugh and her sense of humor which she interspersed frequently in conversation. Her smile could light up a room. Having spent college years with Cyndi at WVU., our many youthful adventures together always bring happy memories of finishing “growing up” together. She could enliven, or shut down a room with a sly grin and joke, or an insightful statement.
Any task which she set for herself would come to fruition. She was resolute.
I have missed you for years, Cyndi, as I miss you now. Our matching, custom blue and gold T-shirt’s given us by two other roommates were a huge hit for all of us on a typical Saturday night on campus. ??” Run Away, Run Away”, they proclaimed our independence!
God speed ,” Cyndi Lou!” . Chippy
