Sherrill “Muffin” Dalton Grant

May 31, 2023

Having spent her last hours with her loving family, Muffin Dalton Grant stepped into her heavenly home on May 31, 2023, after a battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born in Raleigh NC on June 25, 1948, to Rufus McCanless Dalton and Ruth Sherrill Dalton. She spent most of her childhood and school years in Mooresville, NC before moving to Charlotte in 1964. She graduated from Chatham Hall in Chatham, VA and from Hollins College (now University) in Roanoke, VA. She met and married the love of her life, Mitchell Teague Grant and, although divorced after 40 years, she loved him until the day she died. Muffin volunteered for the Junior Leagues of both Charlotte and Boston MA, the Children’s Theater Auxiliary, the Mint Museum Auxiliary, the Arts and Science Council, the Charlotte Pregnancy Resource Center and others. She found her true passion in the study and teaching of the Bible. She joined Bible Study Fellowship in Wellesley, MA in 1986 and was asked to start a new women’s class of BSF on her return to Charlotte. She taught that class for 8 years and became a BSF Area Advisor for 2 more years.

Muffin is survived by her father, Rufus M. Dalton; her children Sarah Grant Graham and her husband Jeff of Charlotte, Mitchell Thomas Grant and his wife, Kristie of Rock Hill; her grandchildren Fletcher Donald Graham, Archer Mitchell Graham, Olivia Hays Grant, Mitchell Thomas Grant Jr, and William Michael Grant; her wonderful nieces and nephews, and cousins both Daltons and Sherrills.  Muffin is also survived by 3 brothers and their spouses, Rufus M. Dalton Jr. and Karen of Pittsboro, NC, Robert F. Dalton and Barbi of Marco Island, FL and David G. Dalton and Jill of Charlotte.  She also leaves an amazing group of girlfriends who have been there for each other through thick and thin.

The family would like to thank Muffin’s caregivers – Olga, Daniella, Isabel and Sonia – who provided invaluable support, care and companionship. Their love for Muffin and her family was such a blessing. The family would also like to thank the Charlotte Hospice nurses and staff. The personal care and concern given to Muffin was comforting and compassionate.

Services will be held at Calvary Church (5801 Pineville-Matthews Rd. Charlotte, NC 28226) Visitation for family and friends will be held in the Chapel on Monday, June 5, 2023 from 6-7:30pm. The funeral service will be held in the Sanctuary at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.

We met Muffin through her brother David and are so lucky to have known her. Such a lovely and caring person and the epitome of a southern lady. Our thoughts, prayers and love to all the family. We will miss her and we will carry her in our hearts.

We are at our daughter’s house at Surfside Beach, SC, and had an email from Sandy Hieronymus, and just read Muffin’s obituary. She was such a wonderful teacher who brought God’s Word so interestingly to those of us who had the privilege of hearing her teach Sunday School. She will be greatly missed by so many, but her loving and caring spirit will continue to live with us throughout our lives. Dear Rufus and all the family, we pray that God’s greatest comfort will dwell within your hearts and minds during these days, and always!

I met Muffin while attending Bible Study Fellowship in Charlotte. Muffin was our beautiful leader and her love for the Lord Jesus Christ was abundantly clear. I am so glad I have kept my notes from her lectures and the Godly wisdom, discernment encouragement and love she gave. Knowing her was a blessing and I will always be thankful. Sad for those of us still here who will miss her but comforted knowing she is in her Heavenly home. Sincere condolences to her family and many friends.

Muffin was always a bright light when I visited Charlotte for CK conferences. She shared her knowledge, wisdom and joy of the Lord generously. I will never forget Muffin’s beautiful smile.
May the Holy Spirit comfort her family. Say “Hi” to Jesus for me. ?

Deepest sympathy to Muffin’s family. I am saddened by her death. She was a bright light and dear friend beginning as a classmate at Chatham. She was our class agent and kept us connected over the years. I’m glad we were able to get together at class reunions and through zoom. I will cherish many fond memories of our time at Chatham. Rest in peace dear Muffin.

Although we rejoice that you’re in your heavenly home, we sure will grieve the earthly absence of such an incredible servant of God. Your wisdom, guidance, mentorship, humor, grace, kindness, and love were unmatched and will leave a huge void. Loved by so many - what a legacy you have left.

I got to know Muffin personally in the most recent years, Her willingness to support, serve, teach in our Covenant Keepers Ministry has been remarkable. Her gracious attitude has poured into others just by her being “Muffin”. We love you Muffin and you will not be forgotten. You remain in our hearts.
