Audrey McCray

May 4, 2023

CHARLOTTE – Audrey McCray, 95, passed peacefully at home on Thursday, May 4, 2023.  Born and raised in Eastern NC, to Mabe and Lula Sampson, she was the youngest of eleven children.  She made Charlotte her home at the age of 18 to attend King’s Business College.

Audrey was an avid gardener who loved digging in the dirt and spending time outdoors. Her warm and welcoming personality made her loved by all who knew her; with a gift for gab, she never met a stranger. One of her favorite pastimes was enjoying watching the children play in her cul-de-sac.

Audrey is survived by her children, Marian McCray Pruett and her husband, Michael of Carolina Beach, Sarah Ann Sykes of Charlotte and Joseph McCray of Marshville; grandchildren, Chris and Kim Pruett of Los Gatos, CA, Ashley McCray Howell of Roxboro, and Sam Sykes of Charlotte all of whom cherished and loved their “Nannie”; her precious great-grandchildren, Carter, Avery, Milo, Mari, Arya and Caden.  Also surviving are her nieces and nephews that she so dearly loved.  She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, Harrison Rowland McCray.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to her “family” at Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region and caregiver and friend, Lynn.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in memory of Audrey to Atrium Health Foundation, Attn: Levine Cancer Institute Hematology Oncology and Blood Disorders, 208 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Audrey was a loving, tender hearted soul, I learned when I sat down to talk with her many times while visiting
with Mike and Marian’s. She was a true to the heart “southern gal” and I loved her additions to the Thanksgiving meal we shared at the beach. I can never get my collard greens to turn out as tasty and tender as hers and her cornbread dressing was quite a change from my northern oyster dressing. I know she cherished every member of her family dearly and nothing was more important to her than a phone call from one of them.
Her time on life is done; her life eternal has now begun.

Our family has such warm memories of Aunt Audrey. We loved her beautiful smile and her love for life and family. Everyone in our family was very fond of Audrey and Mac too.
They were so good to us and we always loved seeing them at our grandparents house growing up. We will keep in touch with your family and please know that we are here if you need us. Audrey will be missed.
Prayers and love for your family during this time,
    Brenda and Adam White
