Peggy Anne Hull Clemens

April 28, 2023

Peggy Anne Hull Clemens passed away on April 28, 2023 after a sudden, but brief illness. She was born on January 15, 1943, on Parris Island Naval Base to Rubye and P.C. Hull, Jr. She grew up with her loving family in Charlotte and remained a devoted daughter throughout her parents’ lives. After graduating from Myers Park High School, she attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, before transferring to UNC-Chapel Hill, where she received a degree in Social Work. She returned to Charlotte to pursue her career in social services, before relocating to Atlanta and working for Aetna Insurance and Eastern Airlines. While in Atlanta, she married, gaining a stepdaughter and stepson, and gave birth to two daughters.

Peggy moved frequently due to her husband’s career, creating a beautiful home in each location. She adored her children, and animals, so there were always cats and dogs about, and she cherished their companionship. She loved a good tune and dancing. She had the best laugh. Summers were often spent with her parents in Litchfield, South Carolina, where she enjoyed walks on the beach and soaking in the sun.

She started a career with Belk Department Stores in the 1990’s and worked there for 20 years before retiring. She relocated to Charlotte to be near her father and reconnected with friends and cousins. She loved lunch dates and having her friends over for an appetizer and cocktail. For her 80th birthday, she took a trip with her daughters and grandson to Beaufort, SC, to revisit her birthplace and the South Carolina beaches she loved.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and by her stepdaughter Sharon. She is survived by her daughter Katherine Ray (Billy), daughter Sarah Scozzafava (David), stepson Michael Clemens (Mary), granddaughter Elizabeth Ray, grandson Will Ray, brother James Hull (Ginny), and nephews, niece, cousins, and friends.

The family would like to thank the amazing caregivers at Novant Presbyterian Hospital who gave such great love and support to Peggy over the last few weeks. Memorials may be made to Charlotte Humane Society, 1348 Parker Drive, Charlotte, NC 28208 or to Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.

A memorial service will be held in the Francis Chapel at Myers Park United Methodist Church on May 19, 2023 at 11am.

The picture of Peggy is beautiful -just like she was-inside and out. I had the pleasure of knowing Peggy beginning in Atlanta in early 1970 when we lived next door to each other in an apartment complex. After I married and moved to Charlotte later, I reconnected with Peggy and enjoyed knowing her again for several years. She was a wonderful friend, gracious, kind, caring, and fun. She loved her family and friends and was a devoted caretaker to various pets over her lifetime. It was a joy to be in her company and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
