Betsy Cansler Thomas

CHARLOTTE – Betsy Cansler Thomas, 91, of Charlotte died Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Sharon Towers.  She was born on February 5, 1927 in Presbyterian Hospital, daughter of the late Edwin Thomas Cansler, Jr. and Nell Cave Cansler.  A Charlotte native, Betsy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L.C. Thomas Jr. whom she married in 1948. 

Betsy graduated from Central High School in 1945 and attended Gulf Park College in Gulf Park, Mississippi and Queens College in Charlotte. Prior to her marriage, she worked at WBT Radio and later at HY Dunaway Company and Home Realty and Management Company.  She was very active in the community and was involved in the Little Theatre of Charlotte, The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte and was a volunteer at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (CMC).  She was also a former member of the Charlotte Junior League, Charlotte Debutante Club, Benedicts Club, Charlotte Cotillion Club and the Charlotte Country Club.

Betsy enjoyed a life-long love of the beach and the mountains, particularly at their family home in Little Switzerland, NC. Later in life she spent many happy days with family and friends at Little Switzerland and the Boone area.

Betsy is survived by her three children, Charles L.C. Thomas III and his wife, Mary Sue Thomas, Diana Cansler Thomas, and Robert C.M. Thomas and his wife, Fran Rock Thomas; grandchildren, William Cansler Thomas, Robert C.M. Thomas Jr. and his wife, Stephanie Lynn Thomas , Edwin Cansler Thomas and his wife, Jeannie Jackson Thomas; great-grandchildren, Sadie Laine Thomas, James Lee Thomas and Emma Claire Thomas. 

The family would like to offer a special thanks to the staff and companions at Sharon Towers and Hospice and Palliative Care who took such good care of Betsy in her later years.

Services will be private.
