Rachel Pegram Roberts

August 15, 2018

CHARLOTTE – Rachel Violet Pegram Roberts, 91, died peacefully on August 15, 2018.  She was born October 16, 1926 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Philip Sloan and Elma Scoggins Pegram. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Clarence Wilkerson Roberts and her brother William Frank Pegram.

Rachel graduated from Central High in 1944 and was the driving force behind their many reunions. She attended Queens College and became a medical secretary. Rachel was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Charlotte where she taught Sunday school and influenced many generations of young children. She loved her many dogs, reading her morning newspaper and creating various handiwork projects. No project was too big or too small for her to tackle. Rachel expertly used knitting needles to create baby booties for friends and was unafraid to pick up a hammer or saw to help build their own home on Lake Wylie.

Rachel was a mother, grandmother and a great grandmother who loved spending time with her family at the “River”.  She is survived by her daughters, Wyndie Havnaer and husband, Dickie, and Tricia Gupton; grandchildren, Tammie Welch and husband, Burt, Alan Havnaer and wife, Holly and Katie Gupton; greatgrands, Caroline and Thomas Welch, and Julianna, Wade and Harper Havnaer.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at First Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Catawba River Keeper Foundation, 715 N Church Street, Suite 120, Charlotte, NC 28202, Westminster Towers Endowment Fund, 1330 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732 or First Baptist Church Preschool Ministry 301 S. Davidson Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.
