Virginia Slagle Hawfield

June 12, 2018

Virginia Slagle Hawfield, 99, of Waxhaw, NC, passed away on June 12, 2018 from complications from pneumonia. She was born on February 27, 1919 in Ledger, NC.

Her parents were Charles Luther Slagle and Martha Elizabeth Gouge Slagle. Virginia’s father was a rural mail courier who delivered mail by horseback in the NC mountains. He later acquired a car and Virginia remembered riding with him as a young girl to help navigate in the fog.

Virginia had three younger sisters: Celene Phillips is deceased. Madeline (Mimi) Bryant of Spruce Pine, NC and Katherine (Kate) Hoskins of Herndon, VA survive.

The Slagle family put a premium on education and all four girls received a college education. Virginia’s father raised the funds for her tuition at Lees McRae College by harvesting a large walnut tree and selling the lumber. Virginia received a degree in medical records which led to her career at Rock Hill Hospital. While working there, she met a gregarious pharmaceutical salesman, Philip Steele Hawfield, who came by her office each week ostensibly to use the telephone. They fell in love and married in 1956.

Phil and Virginia built their home on family property in the Lower Providence Township of Mecklenburg County. They were members of Harrison United Methodist Church and were faithful to the church throughout their lives.

They were blessed with a daughter, Elizabeth Jane Hawfield, whose loving care allowed Virginia to live independently until her final illness.

Virginia was a member of the Lower Providence Community Club. She loved nature, particularly her garden, and all animals except for the rabbits who feasted on her plants. Virginia was attached to English Springer spaniels, including her latest dog, “Lady.”

In addition to her sisters and daughter, she is survived by nieces and nephews and their numerous children and grandchildren. Members of the first generation consist of Greg Bryant (Vickie), Robert Hoskins, Katherine Mackey, David Phillips (Sondra), Joan Plummer (David), Jane Rone Clawson (Van), Linda Byrum, William Ardrey (Cathy), Erskine Ross (Joe), Thomas Ardrey (Peggy), Sam Ardrey (Laine), Joe Miller Ardrey (Marshall), Ben Hawfield (Linda), and Frank Hawfield.

Virginia was a woman of faith and fortitude. She loved her family deeply and never lost her affection for the North Carolina mountains. She thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings with the Ardrey clan, especially at Christmas and the Fourth of July. Her memory will be cherished.

The family is especially grateful for the skilled and gentle nursing care for Virginia by the wonderful personnel at Sharon Towers over the last year.

Her funeral will be held at Harrison United Methodist Church, 15008 Lancaster Highway, Pineville, NC 28134, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018. After the burial, the family will receive friends at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the church.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606.
