William Morten "Pete" Parker

September 10, 2016

William Morten "Pete" Parker, of Charlotte, died on September 10, 2016. Pete was born in Charlotte on November 6, 1931. He died at Brighton Gardens after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was the son of the late William Parker and Ruth Morten Parker.

Pete served in the US army from 1953 to 1955. He then graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and married Mary Shaw on June 20, 1958. Mary and Pete were married for 57 years until her death on July 5, 2015. Pete is survived by daughters Helen Parker Mills and Mimi Parker Rambo; granddaughters, Mary Morgan Mills and Kathryn Parker Mills; a sister, Beverly Coe Blythe; nephew, Kenneth Sears Coe, Jr. (Rush) and niece, Jeannie Coe Fuller (Robert). He is also survived by brother-in-law, William Arnold Shaw (Linda) and their families.

Pete was a kind and gentle man who fiercely loved his family and friends. He was a wonderful golfer who grew up playing at Myers Park Country Club and later at Charlotte Country Club. He had a golf swing that was the envy of many. Besides golf, Pete's favorite pastime was watching Tarheel basketball with his family. He loved the beach. Southport was his favorite having spent years on the catwalk helping bring in the ships. Truly though, any beach would do as long as his wife and best friend Mary was with him.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Monroe for the care given to Pete the last 14 months. They would also like to express a great appreciation to Dr. Chuck Edwards and his team at Memory Center, Charlotte for the guidance and support they gave Pete and his family. The extraordinary care and love given to Pete day in and day out by the staff at Brighton Gardens was a comfort beyond measure to his family.

A memorial service to celebrate Pete's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 16 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Deborah Conner officiating. There will be a reception in Oxford Hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Charlotte Neuroscience Foundation to support the amazing work of Memory Care Center Charlotte, NC , 300 Billingsley Road, Suite 108, Charlotte, NC, 28211.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth Poe Services 1321 Berkeley Avenue, Charlotte, NC, 704-641-7606.
