C. Thomas Hutchins Jr.

C. Thomas Hutchins, Jr., 87, passed away on January 2, 2016, at Novant Presbyterian Hospital. Tom was born July 25, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York and was the son of C. Thomas Hutchins and Mary Kendrick Hutchins of Durham, North Carolina. Tom graduated from Durham High School in 1945 and attended NC State University from 1945-1947. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in June of 1951. After graduation he married his sweetheart, Margaret Penn, and saw duty on the S.S. Rockbridge (APA-228) and USS Macon (CA-132) operating out of Norfolk, VA. Tom left active duty as a Lieutenant in 1955. The Academy continued as an important part of his life. In 1955, Tom opted to join industry, after fulfilling his Navy obligations; where with General Electric he became a very successful Turbine Power Submarine division engineer and sales executive. This kept him in close touch with the naval service by becoming a recognized expert in submarine propulsion and other aspects of the Navy's submarine service requirements. His last assignment with General Electric was in Charlotte as Southeast District Manager of Marine & Defence Facilities Sales Operations.

Tom was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church. He was also a member of Myers Park Country Club as well as a member of The Retired Couples Club and The Rotary Club of Charlotte where he became a Paul Harris Fellow. He and his wife, Peg, were active members of the Charlotte Symphony Guild. Tom was preceded in death by his only child, Margaret (Meg) Penn Hutchins and by his brother, Richard Hutchins. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Peg) Penn Hutchins; and granddaughter, Alison Shapira of Kirkland, Washington; and his sisters, Christine Hutchins and Mary Gitzendanner of Olathe, Kansas.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 9, 2016, at 2:00 PM at The Cypress of Charlotte, 3442 Cypress Club Drive with the Reverend Lisa Saunders officiating. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Dr. Margaret P. Hutchins Memorial Endowed Scholarship, Illinois State University, College of Education, Campus Box 5300, Normal, IL 61790-5300.
